Getting rid of WISPTIS.EXE

Doing a bit of looking around on my system and noticed a strange process running... wisptis.exe. After a bit of research I found it's part of the tablet input system. Being that I don't have a tablet, I figured it's not really supposed to be there. I found these instructions on how to get rid of it. Simple huh? Just delete about 80 uniquely named registry keys. Oh don't worry, they're all easy to read/remember, like :

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F0291081-E87C-4E07-97DA-A0A03761E586}

See how easy that is? Ok, that's the first, only 79 to go!

You could just not install the journal viewer from windows update...

acrobat reader and office 2003 also install it.

You can un-install windows Journal from the add/remove programs in the control panel..
if you're smart enought to edit the registy I assume you know how to use the add/remove option utility?

Well plebescent me, I saw the same process running after doing a carpet bombing of W2K updates to get rid of the sass worm (it worked too!). Said carpet update included things that I didn't use, aparently linked to the windows journal you have mentioned. I found this post to be informing (via a google search), so it's good to know someone already did the work for me! Thanks Arcterex. Thanks bluenexus too for the simple solution.

It's always reassuring to know, too, that there's Fuzz types out there who know it all and have a purposeful enough life to add critical commentary to your forums. :)

An easier way to do it is to right click on the file C:\windows\system32\wisptis.exe, click Properties, go to the security tab and remove all permissions except for Read permissions.

You'll never see it run again.

Or, instead of some people being dicks you could respect the fact that some people, rather than removing updates, would like to stop the service. If you want to stop the service without removing the updates there's a .reg file available at boredguru. Here's the link to the discussion:

There is a bug in the reg file. Open the file, and delete the space between "cur rent"

Alternatively you could just use the regional settings > Language > details and remove the advanced Text services.
