Good thread on the gentoo forums on getting XOrg 6.7.99.x / 6.8.0 working. Sounds like the new X.org server (a replacement for XFree86) has "true" transparancey and some other goodies, at least in the CVS release. Something to try when I get home.
Let us know what think of it :-)
Well, quickly I have to say that I did the install and it's ... well, exactly the same. 0 config file changes (other than a bunch of keyboard map definition files, but didn't have to touch my XF86Config), and it all looks and feels pretty much exactly the same. I'm sure there are some bugs somewhere though (need to get my windows key working). Oh, I did have to add an extensions section in my xf86config to get composite working (to get dropshadows).
Compiling a newer version (the .902 release) lets me run xcompmgr which gives nice and sexy drop shadows. Not as refined as os/x though (ie: somethings that don't need drop shadows are, such as the dropdown url history bar in firefox), but still sexy. Just about to compile the cvs version to see if I can get true window transparancy to work for me.
It feels a bit faster moving windows around and whatnot, but that could be just me.
