HowtoForge has a nice tutorial on Preventing SSH Dictionary Attacks With DenyHosts. This is the program I installed last week on UFies and it seems to be working just fine. So far I have 37 IPs blocked, and my SSH attempts are down to under 100 to over 20,000 per day :)
