RAID Discussion

Found some good links on RAID setup and options. In essence it says that RAID-5 (which this server is built on) isn't the way to go, and RAID1 is way better (even though you lose disk space). I'm now having to re-think my new desktop install dangit!

Links are:

Enjoy! Warning though, much deep-geek stuff in there.

Sorry, I have to disagree with this statement: "In essence it says that RAID-5 (which this server is built on) isn't the way to go, and RAID1 is way better (even though you lose disk space)"

For me it depends what you are looking for and where your bottlenecks are. Yes a Porche goes very fast, but if you're in rush hour it won't make that much difference.

I'd go RAID 10 if you have the disks for protection, but remember the more spindles, the less of a performance hit RAID 5 will incure.

I don't belive I/O issues are that big of an issue on this box appart from backups.

(Just my 2cents:) )
