Another RAW Image Viewer Jakub points to a java app over at Through-the-lens.net called RawView which allows you to view and deal with the RAW images that come from the higher end digital cameras using the dcraw library.

Works great under OS/X as well, just download the zip file, unpack and click on the .jar file... gotta love it!

New Call of Duty Expansion Screenshots Shacknews pointed to some new Call of Duty: United Offensive screenshots. Mostly showing off the new explosion and fire effects (which look awsome). Looking forward to getting this, as CoD was the first game in ages that I actually got through the entire thing and enjoyed!

Screaming Doom 3 Guys Video Well, according to Accordion Guy these guys are playing Doom 3 and screaming in fright. You can get a link with the video here. I'm not sure I believe it, the guys seem to be hamming it up just a bit too much for the camera, and when I get scared in Doom 3 it's the "jump as something jumps at you unexpectedly" scared, not the "screaming like a little girl with her arm in a meat grinder" scared. It's amusing anyway.

Using RAM as Swap Space Kernel trap has an article on How to Use RAM as Swap. Basically you'd setting so that when you run out of physical memory instead of going to the hard disk for storage space, you move that into ... uhmm.... physical memory. Hmm.... Well, read the article and decide for yourself :)

X.org on Gentoo Good thread on the gentoo forums on getting XOrg 6.7.99.x / 6.8.0 working. Sounds like the new X.org server (a replacement for XFree86) has "true" transparancey and some other goodies, at least in the CVS release. Something to try when I get home.

Dealing with MT Comment Closing Link Wrapup D2R has a good selection of ways to turn comments off on MovableType. IE: automagically close comments after a certain point. After cleaning up 200 or so ads for some random stupid website yesterday this is well timed. Kill the comment spammers!

Auto-Rejection for the Masses

DarrenBarefoot points tor papernapkin.net, a rejection service. Short story is when someone asks you for your email address, you give them <anyname>@papernapkin.net, and when they email they get this to the point reply.

GNUEnterprise GNU Enterprise looks pretty cool, a free software application server project. GNU Enterprise (GNUe) is a meta-project which is part of the overall GNU Project. GNUe's goal is to develop enterprise-class data-aware applications as Free software. Screenshots on the page help show what they are talking about with the system.

Peer 2 Peer Personals Back (Kinda) Yea, I've said it before, but I'm saying it again. Peer 2 Peer Personals is back in development. I've taken the stand that I WILL get something going for this to bring it back from it's 1996 roots of cgi scripts into the modern age. More importantly though, the last bug that was preventing me from getting the admin site for it working, where Iambe and myself approve personal ads, has been fixed, meaning that now your ads will actually show up in the site. Hopefully a new featureset and new look will revitalize the site and we can start hooking some geeks up!

Doom 3 Review That Hits it On the Head Sometimes you have to go through a few reviews of a game that you've played to try to find something that puts your feelings into words. It took a while but this one seemed to hit it right on the head:

[...] Its scary. If you have heart conditions, do not play this game. Buy it, but don't play it. I have never been more scared in my life. When I first ran into the main baddies in Halo I was scared for a little bit, but eventually I just ripped into them. In Doom3, from start to finish I am one scary creature away from pissing my pants.

[...]

The sound is also top notch. In stereo I still could tell there was a creepy undead marine behind me. If you have a 5.1 setup, prepare for an aural orgasm.

[...]

... not once in Doom3 was I sad that I would have to go into another room, scream like a little girl, run back out, collect myself, and then go forward.

That pretty much says it all. Well, almost all. Can you tell I've been playing a lot of this game lately? :)

The Case That Must Not Be Named Case Mod

The Case That Must Not Be Named looks very cool.

This Case Mod was inspired by the works of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. A lot of his tales in the "Cthulhu Mythos" dealt with Elder Gods and Things That Man Was Not Meant To Know. This design is not a literal depiction of any one thing, more of an interpretation of a PC that has transformed. The name, which seemed appropriate, was inspired by Lovecraft's Elder God, Hastur, He Who Must Not Be Named. (least you accidentally summon him to you; which never ended well)

I saw it and thought of the book that Ash tried to read from in Evil Dead 3, but hey, who am I to judge. Nifty looking mod to say the least.
