The Verizon iPhone Post

So the rumor mill is thundering with talk that The Verizon iPhone is Coming after a invite to a Verizon event at 11:00 on 1/11/2011 went out. This may (and I do emphasize may) be the introduction of the iPhone on the Verizon network. If not, as my friend Bryan says, everyone should just never talk about this again, as it's been said to be coming "just around the corner" since the iPhone was introduced in 2007.

Interesting to wonder a few things though. Most importantly, will this mean a huge upsurge in iPhone adoption as all the people whining about "I'm not getting an iPhone when it's on AT&T" shut up and get an iPhone. I also wonder if the US will have any issues with the iPhone on multiple carriers. We in Canada have had iPhone on Rogers, Bell, Telus and Fido for years now without issue, so I hope not. Also will the Verizon network crumble like AT&T's did under the weight of a huge influx of new iPhone users and their hefty data usage?

Or will they just be announcing a new tablet or a new pricing model for evening minutes?

I don't think their network will buckle honestly, not at this stage in the smartphone mobile data game. They've been doing fine with all the android devices they currently offer, I don't see that much of an increased flux of new subscribers to the mobile data market on verizon's branch just due to the iphone. Now if we could just get them to actually offer 4g, somewhere, anywhere.

True enough. Time will tell... I'm all for competition and better wireless for my American friends for sure. Also, isn't "4G" just a renaming of "3G"? :)

From technical standpoints, yes 4g is really 3g, although in the actual areas where "4g" is available, it is faster than 3g, but no, it still doesn't measure up to the standards that 4g is supposed to, ie 1000Mb/s. If it did, I'd be ditching my phyiscal lines for internet at the house, because they'd be slower.

There's just no all-around winner in this race, though imho, AT&T just got shunted to the sidelines without the corner on iPhone at this point. But take Verizon, they have a monumental coverage spread for their service, but sometimes slow 3g speeds vs. Tmobile who has the highest cap on speed across the 4g, but really crappy signals in a lot of places you'd expect it to be decent. So it's a game of give and take really. Neither one sucks to the point of wanting to slam your phone through your eye sockets, but maybe sometimes you just want to smack someone in the face with it instead.
