Adelaide, South Australia
Adelaide is the State Capital of South Australia, the 4th largest Australian State by population. The city is serviced by an extensive bus network including the North-East Busway (O-Bahn Guided Busway), an aging fleet of Interurban style Trams operating between Victoria Square and Glenelg Beach, and what must be one of the worst suburban rail systems in the developed world. In my opinion it is second only to Auckland as the worst system I have traveled on. Still operated by diesel railcars at a time when most railsystems have gone electric or at least to high-speed push-pull diesel sets. Adelaide has neither of these with poor track alignment and condition meaning trains can only operate at maximum speeds of around 70kph on most parts of the system. Stations are also in a decrepit state and do nothing to invite the travelling public. Adelaide's suburban rail network, like Melbourne, operates on the 1600mm (5'3") broad gauge.
Nevertheless, for the enthusiast Adelaide is still worth a look, and here are some pictures showing the last days of the Red Hens in 1995. For information on Adelaide Transport visit the TransAdelaide web page.
