Service is provided by a network of buses that operate direct downtown and also feed into the 'C-Train' network. 'C-Train' is a 3 line Light Rail network using the original 2-car articulated Siemens-Duwag U2 vehicles that are identical to those operating on Edmonton Transit, San Diego Trolley and a number of other cities. In addition to these, a new generation of light-rail vehicles, also of Siemens SD-160 design are operating to supplement the service the original U2's.
In the Downtown area, the entire 7th Avenue has been reserved as a transit mall for use by both buses and the LRV's at high level platforms at alternate intersections. The extreme western end of the 7th Avenue transit mall (close to the Calgary Greyhound Depot) is the terminus for the North-Eastern Line to Whitehorn, while the North-West (Dalhousie) & Southern Lines (Somerset/Bridlewood) are through routed and operate through the downtown area. Further extensions are also planned for both the North-Western & North-Eastern Lines.
Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to travel by train to Calgary other than by the overly expensive and very tourist oriented 'Rocky Mountaineer' from Vancouver. VIA Rail suspended regular transcontinental service on the Canadian Pacific main line (that also served Banff, Alberta & Regina, Saskatchewan) in 1990.
