Melbourne, Victoria
Melbourne is the State Capital of Victoria, the 2nd largest Australian State by
population. Melbourne's transit comprises of Suburban Trains, Trams and Buses. Until
privatisation by the former Liberal Government in 1998, the suburban operations were
operated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority, trading as 'The Met'. The MTA along
with V/LINE (Inter-urban and long distance trains) were divisions of the Public
Transport Corporation of Victoria.
Melbourne has one of the largest networks of Suburban Railway lines, covering a good
area of Greater Melbourne. The longest run being to Pakenham on the Gippsland Line. The
Tram network is also large, being the largest in the English-speaking world. For
information visit Victrip.
Since the privatisation until April 2004, the Trains and Trams have each been operated as two seperate
operations. The 2 Train companies were Connex
and M>Train. The 2 Tram companies were Yarra Trams
and M>Tram. M>Tram & M>Train were previously the operation of National Express. From December 23 2002,
National Express withdrew from their contract to operate the M>Tram & M>Train networks and
as a result they have for the time being reverted to being operated by the Victorian
Government. The current government has negotiated with Connex & Yarra Trams to take
over the M>Train & M>Tram networks respectively, and this arrangement came into effect from April 2004.
Recently, the widely held view that the privatisation in Melbourne has not been as
effective as it could have been because there is no uniform branding of the services has
been admitted by the current Victorian Government. In an attempt to address this, the Metlink uniform branding of
transport signage has commenced. It remains to be seen how effective this will be as it is
understood that the private operators will still display their own liveries, instead of a
common uniform that has been used in the Adelaide (Adelaide Metro) and Perth (Transperth)
privatisations.
